Shortlist, HNS First Chapters 2026
I’m honoured — and still a little amazed — at where a field trip can lead. A year ago I travelled to Belgium and the Netherlands with students for a Model UN conference, exploring the canals of Bruges and learning about the women of the historic beguinages who quietly shaped the city’s past. While students debated diplomacy in committee, I found myself scribbling story ideas instead of editing my PhD thesis. That story, The Bruges Affair, has been shortlisted in the Adventure category of the Historical Novel Society’s 2026 First Chapters Competition.

Harvard Model Congress Europe, Madrid 2026
Faculty Lead for Canadian cohort attending Harvard Model Congress Europe. Now in its 39th year, HMCE invites students to step into the roles of legislators, diplomats, and policymakers through simulations of debates, caucuses, trials, press conferences, and testimonies. Throughout the conference, students grapple with complex global issues while practicing the art of negotiation, diplomacy, and civic leadership. By the end of the experience, they leave with new knowledge and the confidence to become engaged citizens in their own communities.
